Want a Great Career in IT? Look toward Texas

Texas cities dominated earlier this year in an annual “Best Cities for Good Jobs” survey performed by Forbes. Five out of the ten cities listed were located in the lone-star state, with Dallas coming in at number one. The city had a job growth rate of over two percent last year and is set to add more jobs at a rate of 2.8% by 2019. The per-capita income in Dallas is around $1,600—over the national average.

Houston stands in the second place spot with an expected five-year job growth rate of 2.6% and per-capita income of almost $43,000. The state’s capital city, Austin, came in on at number three the Forbes list with a five-year annual growth rate of almost four percent and per-capita income of around $35,000.

After awarding Texas the number two spot in the American Information Technology job market, CBS.com reports that the reason the state is ranked so high may be due to the number of colleges and universities located there. Not only that, but the Dallas/Fort Worth area is home to many large companies such as Exxon Mobil, AT&T, J.C. Penney, and Dr. Pepper, among others. CBS also reports that with the addition of 67,000 tech jobs in the US in 2012, the number will only increase across the country, not simply in Texas alone.

Other cities that made the Forbes list include Denver, Seattle, San Francisco and Salt Lake City. According to CBS, Texas comes in second place on the list behind California with a lead of 970,000 tech jobs to Texas’ 485,000.
